One of the things I see great leaders constantly do is work on controlling their egos and hubris.
As an old “rocker”, I believe wholeheartedly in what the Aussie Group Skyhooks sang:
“Ego is not a dirty word
don’t believe what you’ve seen or what you’ve heard”
Skyhooks
It’s a part of who you are. It’s your ego that got you to where you are now.
However, unless you control it, it may also be the very thing that will get you stuck. It may be your undoing.
That’s why I absolutely love Hamish Thomson’s new book It’s Not Always Right to Be Right.
The title says it all.
“But wait there’s more!”
In the book, Hamish, a seasoned global leadership executive, not only shares invaluable lessons from his 30-year career, but he has also partnered with industry authorities and thought leaders to comment on the lessons within. Like all good leaders, he realises that his opinion is not the only one on the block so he backs this up by asking for others’ input.
Now that’s humility!
This episode of Leaders for Life Radio is jam-packed full of Hamish’s wisdom on life, business and why it’s “not always right to be right”. While it’s titled CEO Leadership Lessons, there’s something in there for leaders from all walks of life and at every level.
As you listen, please reflect on where you’ve been insisting that you’re right and perhaps it isn’t getting you what you want. Because some people would rather be right than happy.
