Your Leadership Shadow

Carl Jung, a Swiss psychologist, taught there are two parts of our personality. There’s the part we willingly show to the world and those around us and then there’s our Shadow. This is the side of ourselves we try to hide, disown or are simply not aware of.

We all have “shadow” aspects of ourselves and although we may seek to suppress or ignore them, chances are the people around us can see them or are in some sense affected by them. And guess what, if you are not aware of your shadow and how it projects onto others (your colleagues, your family, your friends) it can really cripple your impact as a leader.

Scary stuff!

So what can you do about it? Unfortunately, you can’t just ‘remove’ your shadow but you can begin to acknowledge it and begin to build an awareness of it. Yes, simply acknowledging that you have a shadow is an important first step, but identifying your shadow is a little trickier.

In this video we’ll give you the 3 key questions to help you begin to identify Your Leadership Shadow so you can start to develop an intimate awareness of it.

How are you managing your time? Are you getting the results you want?

Maybe you keep a diary and have daily, weekly or even monthly “to do” lists for all your priorities. If you have a team you might even go as far as scheduling in time for weekly catch ups with each member to see what they’re up to and how you can support them

Yet often the tools and techniques we are given to manage our time focus on keeping up to speed with the day-to-day, hitting our targets or fulfilling our KPI’s. Very few focus on the future.

Your role as a leader is to help people create that future, to paint a picture of what it looks like and excite people about their role in getting there.

You’ve got to do more than respond to what’s in front of you.

Become a PEST In The System

How well do you know your organisation? Sure, you’ve got a pretty good idea of your role and what your team is working on but are you aware of what’s going on in other parts of the business and the impact of your decisions on people outside of your function? Because a business is like a big bowl of jelly, you touch it on one side and it wobbles on the others.

Great leaders are “Whole Systems” thinkers. They realise that their decisions and actions have ramifications that are Political, Economic, Social and Technical (P.E.S.T.). Yet many leaders, only view their organisations from their own corner of the world, failing to realise the true impact of their decisions on other parts of the system.
